Google and Salesforce.com are in talks for an alliance that could help them compete better against Microsoft, according to a report on The Wall Street Journal's website.

The companies are still working out details of a potential partnership, which is expected to be announced in the next few weeks, the paper said, citing unnamed sources.

It said one outcome could be a web-based offering that integrates some of Google's online services - such as email and instant messaging - with Salesforce.com's customer relationship management tools.

Google and Salesforce.com could not be immediately reached for comment.
