NTL launches UK online shopping service
By Polly Raymond
Published: Wednesday 07 October 1998
Cable operator NTL has launched an online retail service for its one million UK subscribers. The company claims it will be the first to offer shopping, banking and booking services in a single package.
NTL is apparently in discussions with around 35 companies including British Airways, Barclays and Universal Studios - which will use the newly created channel to sell products and services.
NTL has pipped other channel operators to the post by launching ahead of rival BiB (British Interactive Broadcasting). It's plans for a shopping channel developed by BSkyB won't go live until next year. Another competitor from Cable & Wireless Communications is not due until late next year.
