Traditional copyright is dead:

Large corporations who "own" much copyrighted material, together with the obsolescent broadcast & print media are fighting a losing battle.

TV viewing figures are down, newspaper readership is down, etc. etc.

Many people now have the equipment, the skills and the interest to create their own material: Hence the dramatic rise in web sites which offer sharing of this "user generated content."

The photocopier was a threat to the copyright of printed material: Digital technology now spells the end of traditional copyright.

We need a new "right" which acknowledges and rewards the original creator, while allowing easier reuse.

The "creative commons" licence shows promise.
