Microblogging app Twitter is no longer merely the preserve of web 2.0 geeks. It's been appropriated and publically embraced by politicians such as US President Barack Obama and celebrities such as Stephen Fry. With friends like those, it's no surprise that its following is growing.

Obama gained more than 60,000 Twitter followers during his US Presidential election campaign but has now amassed more than 500,000, despite the fact he's undoubtedly far too important (and busy) to spend one iota of time composing tweets.

Gadget lover Fry, meanwhile, has accumulated more than 320k followers - a figure that leapt up considerably after he discussed the Twitter phenomenon on Tonight With Jonathan Ross (Ross, incidentally, is also tweeting).

But what about tech execs? Which IT gurus are getting in on the microblogging action? Check out the following pages for our round-up of the top tech execs sending random thoughts out into the cyber ether.

And of course you can keep up with the latest silicon.com headlines via our Twitter feed: siliconlatest.
