The free tool lets users store, work on and collaborate to 1,000 Office documents online and securely access them through a web browser.

The offering is part of Microsoft's efforts to bolster its presence in cloud computing and software as a service.

In comparison, Google's online collaboration technology, Google Apps, has secured 10 million active users two years after its release.

According to Google, around 500,000 businesses have signed up with 3,000 new businesses joining per day.

Microsoft has added 11 new languages - including Japanese and traditional Chinese - to Workspace along with 20 new features such as multi-file upload, activity panels and improved support for Firefox.
