According to the BBC this is the first time a UK broadcaster has provided its programmes through iTunes. Each programme will cost £1.89 to download.

Once downloaded, the programmes can be played on Mac or PC as well as on video iPods, iPhones and Apple's IPTV service.

Simon Danker, director of digital Media at BBC Worldwide said with more people now watching TV on iPods the move is giving audiences a wider variety of options to view BBC shows.

Shows available include Life on Mars, Spooks and Robin Hood. Other shows will be available once they've been shown on BBC iPlayer.

In recent months, the BBC has struck deals with YouTube and MySpace, as well as with ITV and Channel 4 for the Kangaroo on-demand service.
