A YouTube video layer has been launched as a featured content folder in Google Earth which allows users to watch videos about the places they visit on the virtual globe.

The layer places the videos in geographical context so users can zoom in on regions and view the YouTube content about that location.

For example, if a user zooms in on London they can view videos including footage from the Dartford leg of the Tour de France or Ozzy Osbourne live at the Wembley Arena.

Michael Jones, chief technologist for Google Earth, said the combination of Google Earth's 'where' with YouTube's 'what' makes the experience much more complete and compelling than photos alone.

Google bought video-sharing giant YouTube in October of last year.
