iTunes has racked up its three billionth song download, Apple has revealed.

Back in February 2006 iTunes passed the one billion song downloads milestone.

Apple will be hoping the arrival of its first mobile device - the iPhone, which launched in the US last month - will give the iTunes Store a further boost.

The Mac maker also recently branched out into free educational downloads for students with its 'iTunes U' service.

Last month, fears arose after consumer watchdog group the Electronic Frontier Foundation claimed Apple embedded customers' details, such as names and email addresses, within song files purchased from iTunes.
