Google cosied up to more than 5,000 developers at 10 locations around the world at its Google Developer Day this week.

The search giant encouraged developers to 'mash up their mash-ups' - by adding more functionalility to apps such as Google Maps to deliver a new and more rich version of mash-ups.

The global conference saw a number of application launches - including the release of an online code editor for building mash-ups, called Google Mashup Editor.

Edward Parsons, geospatial technologist at Google, said mash-ups have conventionally been good at pulling data together but Google wants to expand them so they do not just combine data but functionality as well.

Parsons added Google needs developers' creativity to help tailor its applications and create examples of "a mash-up of a mash-up" within its mash-up editor.

The forum combined keynotes and workshops in an effort to woo developers into using Google's numerous apps.

Pictured is the London venue as roughly 450 developers piled out of the keynote speech for lunch.
