Television and internet mogul Barry Diller is believed to have made a bid for search service Ask Jeeves. The value of the offer is rumoured to be $2bn.
Ask Jeeves has seen a number of changes in recent times as it attempted to claw back ground on Google but none so dramatic as a change of owner.
However, reports in the US suggest an all-share deal with Diller's InterActive Corp (IAC) could go through as early as today.
A spokesman for Ask Jeeves said: "At the moment this is a rumour and Ask Jeeves isn't going to comment on rumours."
IAC owns a number of large dot-com businesses including Citysearch, Expedia and Match.com.
