Microsoft could be about to pull out of the news organisation that bears its name, MSNBC.
According to The New York Post, Microsoft and NBC, joint owners of the cable news channel, are in "advanced discussion" over the sale of the Redmond behemoth's stake to NBC.
NBC would take sole control of the news company, with Microsoft having rights to use some of its online news content, according to the paper.
Microsoft's involvement in the cable channel, which cost it an investment of over $200m, has never seen the hoped for returns. The channel, which was created in 1996, saw its first quarterly profit last year.
Should Microsoft shed its involvement in the news venture, it wouldn't be the first time the software giant has distanced itself from content provision operations - last year saw it sell its Slate publication to the Washington Post company. It also previously sold its 70 per cent stake in holiday company Expedia.
Microsoft had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
