18.02.00:Memory Corporation, the semiconductor design house turned multimedia device company, has announced a joint venture with Microsoft and SAP.

The Scottish company has teamed up with the two software powerhouses to develop a platform for its 'dig-Music' online music distribution service. Regional sites are expected in addition to the main dig-Music.com hub.

The platform will be based on Windows 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and mySAP.com.

MemCorp is planning to change its name to Dig.

18.02.05: This might have been one of Microsoft's first tentative steps into trying to snaffle up the online music market, but it certainly wasn't its last.

Microsoft last year learned to stand on its own two feet in the music market by creating its homegrown music service and going head to head with the market leader, Apple's iTunes.

This week at trade show 3GSM, the Redmond behemoth announced that it had signed up Nokia as its partner, with the aim of conquering the online music market.

While Apple is still leading music downloads calendar by a country mile, it's yet to make move into the mobile music arena - the much touted iTunes-enabled phone from Motorola has still yet to debut, although Apple execs are promising its appearance soon.
