Apple announced on Monday that its online digital music service iTunes has reached its 100-millionth download.
The much-anticipated milestone was achieved on Sunday evening when 20-year-old Kevin Britten of Hays, Kansas, downloaded the song Somersault (Dangermouse remix) by Zero 7.
Britten will receive one of the company's 17-inch PowerBook notebooks, a 40GB iPod and a gift certificate for 10,000 free iTunes as the prize for downloading the milestone tune.
iTunes, launched just over a year ago in the US, sells 2.5 million downloads per week in the United States, and is continuing to grow rapidly around the world.
Following its launch in Europe last month, the iTunes store sold more than 800,000 downloads in its first week, 450,000 from the UK alone.
Consumers can choose from 700,000 tracks, with tracks being sold for 79p each and most albums available for £7.99.
