The Open Group has won a domain name dispute over the URL for the Unix operating system - www.unix.org.
The group, which owns the rights to the Unix brand across the world, as well as the specifications for the official Unix operating system, claimed it was the victim of cybersquatting.
However, Florida resident Marshall Sorenson, who bought the domain for $5,000 in 2001, said he was trying to create an information website for Unix developers and enthusiasts, a project which has now been crushed by the Open Group.
He said the Open Group was trying to reverse-hijack the name.
The World Intellectual Property Organisation's arbitration service decided that Sorenson had no rights over the name and had registered it in bad faith.
