US crisis: Surfers flock to Amazon disaster relief fund

Amazon.com's disaster relief fund for the victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon and Pennsylvania has already topped $2m only two days after being set up.

The site has already received over 60,000 pledges.

All money will be sent on to the Red Cross.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Amazon.co.uk said: "Like our colleagues in the US, our European teams have been shocked and stunned by recent events in New York, Washington DC and elsewhere in the US. We thought that by offering this service to our customers it would be appreciated and could help efforts."

Donations can be made by visiting www.amazon.co.uk, or any amazon site.

But the Red Cross is warning that emails in circualtion requesting donations or credit card numbers are fake. Emails claiming to be from 'expressrelieffund2001' or the Red Cross are fake. Donations should only be made through amazon or www.redcross.org
