Californian start-up New.net has marked its foray into European waters by releasing 10 extra domain names.

New.net uses proprietary software to mask third level domain names, making them appear to the ordinary web surfer as a top-level address. Users have to download the software, unless their ISP has done so.

Steve Chadima, chief marketing officer for New.net, said: "Icann has done a very poor job of expanding domain names, hence all the good dot-com names have gone. Our business has been brought into existence because they are so slow."

Icann, is the domain name governing body and has come under increasing fire for delaying the release of new domains by the IT industry.

The domains on offer from New.net are: dot-arts, dot-agent, dot-auction, dot-church, dot-love, dot-golf, dot-llc, dot-llp, dot-school, dot-scifi.
