Barclays snaps up ShopSmart.com in bargain basement sale

Barclaycard-owned IndigoSquare has snapped up Shopsmart.com for a song. The retail site has swallowed up its competitor for a mere £1m, a fraction of its supposed value at the height of the dot-com boom.

According to Nick Gault, head of communications at Barclaycard, there is no doubt that IndigoSquare is "getting a good deal".

The etailers are likely to unite under the IndigoSquare brand, and hope they will combine to form the biggest UK online shopping centre.

Gault claims that Shopsmart.com has half a million users per month.
