International bidders barred from Amazon.com auctions

Amazon.com has decided that all users of its auction services must use the company's proprietary payment service, a move which could block out non-US customers.

The Amazon Payment service works in a similar way to store cards, where customers use a debit or credit card exclusive to their Amazon account.

Amazon stressed that customers could also offer alternative payment methods along with the now compulsory Amazon Payment service, and that this change will only affect auction customers.

However, consumer groups have criticized the move, saying it will alienate international customers. The payment service is only valid for payments up to $2,500 and requires proof of a US address and bank account.

Amazon has not yet set a specific date to implement the change. Earlier this month the company also announced that it would begin charging auction customers transaction fees on all successful bids.
