AOL's $130bn acquisition of Time Warner will get the go-ahead from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) if AOL agrees to open its Instant Messaging service to other players.

According to the Washington Post, the draft FCC recommendation would require AOL to allow at least one other messaging provider to access Time Warner's cable television network in competition with AOL.
The FCC is expected to decide whether to challenge the deal by 1 January 2001. It represents the last hurdle before the deal is completed.
