BBC online ads plan attacked by web publishers

The British Internet Publishers' Alliance (BIPA) is calling on the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to oppose any attempt by the BBC to put adverts on its publicly funded websites.

The call comes in the wake of comments made by new BBC director general Greg Dyke that he was considering such a move.

BIPA claims the BBC cross promotes its websites on TV and radio. It also warns that the proposals may contravene EU law on state aid to public service broadcasters.

BIPA is a collection of commercial media and web companies.
