
The UK government has abandoned its plans to regulate unsolicited 'spam' email and will instead rely on self-regulation by ISPs and the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

A report in The Financial Times said the decision was made despite strong recommendations on distance-selling rules from the EU, which ruled companies must include an 'opt-in' policy. The policy allows customers to agree to receive junk email.
A spokesman for the DTI confirmed the news. "Self-regulation is the most effective way of controlling unsolicited email," he said. "Direct marketers in the UK will still have to abide by the Data Protection Act."
