Nokia announces plans for Web-enabled cars

Mobile equipment operator, Nokia, is spearheading a drive to fit every new car with an Internet address by the end of 2005.

In a statement, the company said it will launch its first telematics system - wireless vehicle communications technology - by the end of this year, with second generation equipment following in 2001.

The company said the first telematics systems will be available in Audi, Ford, Mercedes Benz and Opel cars.

Nokia said Web-enabled cars could receive up-to-date information on traffic news.
