ISPA awards favours UUNet, Freeserve and Totalise

Established players such as Cisco Systems vied with Internet upstarts to win recognition at the Internet Service Provider Association's annual awards ceremony yesterday.

UUNet beat rivals AOL and Easynet to pick up the award for Number One European ISP, whilst Freeserve won first place in the consumer ISP section.

Besides the 600 members of the UK Internet industry, Patricia Hewitt, government minister for small businesses and ecommerce, was there to congratulate the winners. Hewitt said the awards demonstrated the great strides that the Internet industry has made in the UK.

Peter Gregory, CEO of ISP Totalise, won the coveted Internet Colossus 2000 award over competition from Richard Branson and Bill Gates.

In the industry section, Linux specialist Red Hat won the mantle of best software provider and Cisco was judged best provider of hardware.
