Doctors take over Moldova

US company, Domain Name Trust, has negotiated an agreement with the government of Moldova to use its dot-md domain name for US medical practitioners.

For every domain name that is registered, the Republic of Moldova reportedly receives $20.

The move allows the commercial exploitation of the dot-md domain by anyone wishing to use it, but Domain Name Trust is marketing the idea towards those selling medical services on the Net.

Users are charged $299 per year for the name and Web-hosting services.

According to the Financial Times, the Domain Name Trust has sold 8,000 dot-md names to date - 2,000 of which are already Web sites.

This has put upwards of $200,000 in the Moldovan government's coffers, according to the UK Financial Times newspaper.
