UN seeks to establish XML-based trading standard

By Dominic Maher

Published: 30 November 1999 18:08 GMT

The United Nations (UN) is teaming up with US-based Oasis (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) to devise standard Web-based electronic business procedures for international trade.

Oasis includes companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Sun, and wants to create standards for paperless trading using XML (Extensible Markup Language).

The move will allow companies to deal electronically throughout the world and obtain a paper certificate for various purposes including insurance, tax or banking.
