Encyclopaedia Britannica to go online for free

By Lisa Burroughes

Published: 20 October 1999 18:29 BST

The Encyclopaedia Britannica is to offer content online for free. The company which once charged £1,000 for a hard-backed 13 volume set, has been hit with dwindling sales revenues over recent years, for both the print and CD ROM versions of its publication.

The company has decided instead to drive revenue through ecommerce, sponsorship and advertising. In particular, it will link specific areas of information with shopping areas where people can buy related products.

The US version is due to go live today on http://www.britannica.com while a UK version will be launched in January 2000.
