Sony and EMI's music divisions are set to jointly develop commercial Web sites, according to a report on the Financial Times.
The two firms have so far refused to comment, but Robin Duke-Woolley, principle consultant at Schema, claims the move is vital if the music industry is to make a successful transition onto the Net.
"The rights of music on the Web is causing the industry heartache," he said, adding that the time has come for the top five music companies to join forces to project copyright.
Many observers agree that online music will be the next big growth industry on the Internet. Researchers predict that nearly $4bn worth of music-related business will be done online within 3 years.
