Compaq has been approached by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a potential sponsor for the Olympic Games. The IOC's deal with IBM is due to end after the Sydney 2000 games and they are seeking replacements for the 38-year-old partnership.
One option would be to replace IBM with three technology areas divided into a hardware company, a software provider and an Internet company.
Despite the fact it would cost the hardware giant at least $40m to become a global sponsor, spokesman Alan Hodel said Compaq is 'flattered' by the approach.
