Scottish clan redesigns tartan online

By John Oates

Published: 31 July 1998 05:45 GMT

An ancient Scottish clan is taking to the Web in order to update its tartan.

Some members of the Moncrieff clan are unhappy with the current red and green pattern, so a vote will be held on the clan Web site to find an alternative. Over a thousand members are expected to vote to choose a new pattern.

Relative hunting has become a very popular use for the Web in the US. Interest in ancestors means that most Irish, Scottish and Welsh names have Web sites devoted to their history.

Moncrieff means 'hill of the sacred bough' and the family originally came from Perthshire.
