Nokia and Kyocera cease fire on patents

Nokia and Kyocera have settled their patent spat with a cross-licensing deal.

The companies had been accusing each other of infringing patents. In Nokia's case, it claimed patents relating to CDMA, a 3G standard; PDC, a 2G standard used in Japan; and PHS, a mobile network system, had been infringed by Kyocera. Kyocera said the Finnish firm was using several patents without permission in a number of its handsets.

The pair now state that all litigation between them, which first commenced in 2004, has been put to bed by the cross-licensing deal.

Nokia is currently yet to settle another ongoing patent wrangle with Qualcomm. Nokia initially lodged a complaint against Qualcomm with the EC, claiming the company had engaged in anti-competitive practices.

Qualcomm subsequently sued Nokia, accusing it of infringing 11 patents pertaining to GSM, EDGE and GPRS.
