In the mid 90s when BT demanded our source code we said NO. We agreed to put up to date copies in Escrow in case our company went bump.
However if they had pushed really hard we would have willingly given them our source code.
Source code in any language is useless without the original system architects and programmers.
If there is any degree of code optimisation [such as in "real time" systems e.g. switching] It is cheaper to rewrite a system than try to adapt it.
