National Grid has signed a £5m-plus deal with Vodafone to shift its voice and data network to the mobile provider.
Under the three-year contract, Vodafone will also provide remote working capabilities for National Grid field staff through mobile broadband devices.
Vodafone will also equip workers with telemetry SIMs to help them detect problems in the electricity or gas grid.
Steve Samways, IS asset and vendor manager at National Grid, said in a statement: "Having completed a comprehensive tender process, Vodafone proved that they could provide us with robust voice and data services across the UK and demonstrated that they understood the importance of reliable communications for National Grid."
