Recently merged Nordic telecoms giants Sonera and Telia have appointed Anders Igel as CEO.

Igel, who takes over from CEO Marianne Nyvert, was previously the CEO of Esselte group - a European office equipment supplier - and has been a member of Telia's board since 1999.

The Nordic behemoth, valued at $17bn, will be 64 per cent owned by Telia shareholders, the largest of which is the Swedish Government.

The new telco will employ 34,000 staff globally and have nearly eight million customers in total in Sweden and Finland.
