Telecoms commissioner Erkki Liikanen says the European market is growing strongly, but if member states don't keep their deregulation plans on track, he will take direct action.
The stern warning came yesterday as Liikanen announced that telecoms revenues in the EU have grown at 10 per cent annually since deregulation started in earnest in 1998.
According to the Financial Times, Liikanen said the key area of concern is high-speed internet access. If the local loop is opened up to third party high-speed operators in line with his targets, he will take legal action.
