Finnish telco Sonera has put itself up for auction with a pricetag of at least $35bn.
Although the company is significantly smaller than its European counterparts, it already owns a 3G licence in Spain and is expected to bid with Spain's Telefonica on Monday for one in Germany.
A buyout would give Sonera the boost it needs to push its proprietary technology for carrying out ecommerce transactions over mobile phones.
Companies thought to be interested include Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and KPN.
