Chello agrees broadband deal with Global TeleSystems

Broadband ISP, Chello, has entered a 10-year strategic partnership with Global TeleSystems (GTS) to increase the overall capacity available to its customers to 2.5Gbps and eventually 10Gbps by late 2000.

chello will take advantage of GTS' optical broadband services, which use DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology.

The capacity will be available through Internet Exchange points in Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, and Paris. Chello's AORTA backbone already uses broadband GTS services.

chello said the relationship will help it support high-bandwidth applications such as full-screen video.

Part of the deal will include joint research and development. The two firms will look at improving video and audio multicasting, and enable broadcast-compliant transmission over IP networks.
