ScottishTelecom gives Demon network £4m facelift

ScottishTelecom has turned to Marconi Communications as part of its effort to upgrade the network of its Demon Internet subsidiary.

Marconi will supply digital exchange and high-speed SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) transmission equipment to the London headquarters of the Internet service provider (ISP).

The contract, worth £4m, will see two System X four-cluster digital exchanges and SDH interconnects being installed at Demon.

Explaining the reason for the improvements, Rod Matthews, ScottishTelecom chief executive and Demon Internet chairman, said: "We will be seeking to route a significant proportion of Demon Internet traffic across the ScottishTelecom fibre optic network, thus increasing revenues for the company as a whole."

Marconi Communications is a division of GEC, formed last year when GEC bought out Siemens' minority stake in telecoms manufacturer GPT and merged the company with its Marconi SpA, GEC Hong Kong and other subsidiaries.
