Published: 6 October 1998 12:45 BST

Expanding its extensive arsenal of telecoms services, AT&T has reached an agreement to buy Vanguard Cellular Systems through a cash plus stock deal worth $1.5bn.

Vanguard provides mobile services to about 625,000 suburban and rural customers on the East Coast of the US under the Cellular One brand name.

The companies said they expect the deal to be completed in the first quarter of 1999. The deal requires the approval of Vanguard's shareholders as well as US regulatory authorities.
