Vodafone Group is to pay $369m for BellSouth New Zealand, a mobile phone operator with over 120,000 subscribers.

BellSouth New Zealand is jointly owned by US BellSouth and Singapore Technologies. It holds a 19 per cent share of the New Zealand cellular market, and operates the only GSM network.

Vodafone already operates networks in Australia and Fiji. The head of BellSouth will report to Brian Clark, chief executive of Vodafone's Australasian operations.
