Does anyone remember the spiritual predecessor, EPOC OS? It was an amazing system that ran on Psion 5 / 7 and had a huge following of 3rd party developers and casual hackers. It was open enough to spark the imaginations of many including myself.
I never felt Symbian showed the same kind of love to small time developers and is perhaps why so much interest has now moved to other platforms. Just look at how many 3rd party apps there are for Apples Iphone now. Its seems only natural that the same developer community will eventually flock towards a new open source platform such as Android.
3rd party applications add value and opportunity but mostly people want to free their creative imaginations and is probably why so many good iphone applications are free.
