Machines will make up 25 million M2M connections to mobile networks by 2009, according to analysts.
The current number of machines hooked up to cellular networks is just five million devices, according to a report by Berg Insight.
The report also predicts that as more and more mobile users abandon the GSM network in favour of 3G, old 2.5G networks will become the domain of machine connections.
Berg Insight also predicts utility meters and vehicles will initially become the main users of mobile connections for M2M communications.
The market for M2M is expected to reach $270m by 2009.
