IM is already available on phones that support the IMPS aka Wireless Village protocol (and haven't had the functionality customised out by operators such as Orange, no doubt fearful of losing lucrative SMS revenue) such as the Sony Ericsson K700, K750 or W800 to name a few. This is interoperable with AIM or MSN via the yamigo service (www.yamigo.com) which is free, all you pay for are the data packets.
