Further to David Barkers comment, both O2 and Orange SMS networks failed completely, shortly after midnight. I am on Orange and I was getting 'unable to send' messages for a good hour after midnight, and my friend on O2 experienced very similar.

But it is only one night of the year and I think it's rather unreasonable to expect the networks to provide sufficient capacity to cope with a once a year event such as that anyway
