Believe it or not, it could be a software problem. The latest SonyEricsson "Customization" codebase as used in newer phones such as the k700i and the k500 has a software bug which will not, in many cases, immediately accept an SMS after customization has occurred. Both SonyEricsson and o2 UK have confirmed this. Currently there is no fix and it means that text messages can take several days (or even two weeks in one case) to actually arrive.
Also - not only at peak times do o2 customers experience delays (regardless of handset). o2's SMS platform is one of the slowest I've had the misfortune of having to use. Texts are frequently delayed for days at a time and only about 80% (which is a little optimistic) of texts get to their destination within minutes.
