Hunger for wi-fi is showing no signs of abating, with BT reporting a doubling in use of its wireless services.

The telco said the number of minutes customers spent online using its wi-fi networks increased by 57 per cent between April and September compared to the previous six months.

Traffic over the networks averaged more than a million minutes per day and eight million minutes per week. BT also recorded its first ever 10 million minute week during September, according to the telco.

The figures include BT Openzone and the BT-FON community launched in October 2007, where members agree to share a small portion of their home broadband connection by opening up a separate channel on their wireless router, the Home Hub.

BT Openzone customers can connect at more than 120,000 UK and Ireland locations, using hotspots from BT as well as its roaming partners.
