WiMax provider Freedom4 is spreading long range wireless love to students in Warwickshire after teaming up with a local college.

The company, formerly known as Pipex Wireless, has made Warwickshire College its learning partner - so students can now make use of its WiMax network and, it hopes, learn more about the tech.

Warwick is one of three cities in the UK to have a commercial WiMax network from Freedom4, along with Manchester and Milton Keynes. WiMax can deliver high speed internet access without the need for wires or a fixed BT line. It also offers faster upload speeds than traditional ADSL and is simple to install, according to Freedom4.

A spokesman for Freedom4 said Warwick's commercial network went live back in May. Coverage currently includes the Leamington Spa, Tachbrook Park, Whitnash and Woodloes Park areas.

Brendan O'Rourke, chief operating officer of Freedom4, said the company believes the education sector can substantially benefit from the tech.

College principal, Ioan Morgan, said in a statement: "The College has a tradition of working with cutting edge companies in every sector, ranging from engineering to computer games manufacturers.

"New technologies are the cornerstone of the knowledge economy. One of the key drivers to success in this area is learning. It is therefore appropriate that Freedom4... and the College establish this new partnership to bring further benefit to the area."
