LG is to merge its PC and mobile-phone divisions, the South Korean manufacturer announced at the end of last week.

According to a statement from the company, the transfer of its PC division into the mobile division will "enhance LG Mobile Communications Company's capabilities amid a rapidly changing mobile-communications environment".

LG intends to increase its focus on smart phones, ultra-mobile PCs and "network infotainment", the statement said, adding: "These have emerged as important sectors to keep pace with in this era of mobile internet, in which users have come to rely on 3G technology and wi-fi for ubiquitous access to information."

The company will, however, continue to develop and manufacture notebooks and "new convergence technology", the statement said.
