Global supplies of Apple's iPhone are running dry, increasing speculation that a 3G version is imminent.

Apple's UK and US online shops both say the 8Gb and 16Gb versions of the iPhone are "currently unavailable" while in the UK, Carphone Warehouse has also sold out of both versions.

When asked when the company might be restocking, a Carphone Warehouse spokeswoman told silicon.com: "Not any time soon. We're reviewing plans."

O2, the sole mobile network currently offering the iPhone in the UK, confirmed in a statement that it has sold out of the 8Gb version with no mention of restocking.

However, the operator has replenished its stocks of the 16Gb devices, which ran out last week.

O2 slashed £100 from the price of the 8Gb iPhone in April and quickly had trouble meeting demand even before the latest shortage.

So far, the iPhone has only been available without 3G technology but it seems the latest shortage could indicate a 3G version is in the pipeline.
