Operating systems for mobile smart phones are big business, with an ever-increasing number of devices on the market. Smart phones generally run on one of three OSs: Symbian, Linux or Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

Symbian has long been the leader in this tech and recently announced 100 million phones have been shipped containing its technology.

The other big OS is Linux which phone manufacturers can tailor from an initial OS kernel. Linux is being pushed by several companies in an effort to create a single Linux platform that will allow new products to be developed more quickly.

Until now, Microsoft has been a small player but the software giant recently signed a deal to develop operating systems with Vodafone, meaning Redmond software could soon represent a major force.

The global leader in handset sales, Nokia uses Symbian in the majority of its smart phones, but the Finnish giant also sells a Linux-based tablet.
