Nokia has updated its Communicator phone with wi-fi connectivity.

The original, qwerty keyboard-equipped 9300 debuted last year and was a major Nokia attempt at cracking the burgeoning email market.

The new device, the 9300i, will enable users to dodge cellular operators' high mobile data tariffs by connecting to their company's network or public hotspots and downloading attachments and other heavy payloads using a standard wireless broadband connection rather than 2.5G.

The phone also comes with a range of email clients pre-installed, including BlackBerry Connect and Visto Mobile.

The phone is expected to show up in European shops in the first quarter of next year.
